Austin Counseling and Nutrition is a private practice created by Jennifer Pereira, LPC, RD, LD. Jennifer has 15 years of experience, at all levels of care, in helping people struggling with eating disorders, disordered eating, body image, and related issues. All of our clinicians are Health at Every Size aligned and Intuitive Eating/Non-diet informed. We specialize in helping people improve their relationships with their bodies and with food. However, we can help with many other struggles as well.

The therapists and dietitians at Austin Counseling and Nutrition are diverse in their backgrounds and experience. Additional areas of experience include, but are not limited to: life transitions, LGBTQ+, couples counseling, sexual assault, grief, disability, Muslim community, and trauma. Modalities used in our practice include: Internal Family Systems, CBT, DBT, ACT, EMDR, and others as indicated.

Our staff engages in supervision and training, as well as continuing education in the areas of eating disorders, trauma, social justice issues, body acceptance, and emerging treatment methods.

Initially, I graduated in 2000 with my Bachelor's in Nutrition Sciences and became a Registered Dietitian. I worked in several facilities, including The Renfrew Center in Florida, where I ran intensive outpatient eating disorder recovery groups. My family moved to Texas in 2006, and I worked in the office of Jessica Setnick until I started my private practice the following year.

In 2013, I graduated with my Master's in Professional Counseling and became a Licensed Professional Counselor in 2015.

My husband and I founded a 501(c)3 non-profit group home for the treatment of eating disorders, called Project Bliss. I created this home as a treatment option for people who could not afford residential care. We provided low or no cost treatment for many individuals. Project Bliss was open from 2012 until 2015, but closed due to lack of funding.

In 2015, I moved to Austin with my husband and two daughters. We love it here for many reasons. One of them is that he's a musician and I am an artist. We are happy to call Austin our home.

I remember when I first decided to study nutrition, in hopes of one day helping others with some sort of wellness program.  Back then I, too, was caught up in the social messages of good and bad foods, mandatory exercise, and the constant fear of my untrustworthy body doing something crazy at any time.

I was the proverbial "health nut"...and I was pretty proud of it.  Unfortunately, I bought into the idea that eating patterns, exercise and body somehow indicated my value as a person. This belief derailed my happiness and well-being for years.

I've found that even people who do not have food or body issues tend to have the same underlying struggles.  Self-image, anxiety, depression, purpose, identity, and relationships are a part of most people's lives, and our society gives few clues on how to handle these things.

No one should have to hit rock bottom or "go crazy" before having access to therapy. It has been my experience that every person can benefit from understanding themselves better.
